Vino’s going green

March 12, 2010

Stroll down any New York street in March and you can’t help be aware of the impending St. Patrick’s Day festivities, in which storefronts and bars become awash in a sea of green. This popular holiday is intended as a salute to the city’s Irish heritage, but is too often transformed into a night of student debauchery: while we too love downing 2-for-1 lite beers and sporting a novelty Leprechaun’s hat, we agree there’s nothing particularly Irish about it.

At Vino we choose our drinks carefully: having recently begun carrying non-Italian products on our shelves (including a growing selection of spirits), we’re thrilled to be throwing a real St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year. Join us on Wednesday, March 17 when we’ll be preparing Tom Moore cocktails made from Finian’s Irish Whiskey! A variation on the classic Manhattan, the Tom Moore replaces rye whiskey or Bourbon with Irish whiskey, making it the quintessential Irish-New York drink!

Finian’s Five Provinces Irish Whiskey harkens back to a time when Ireland was comprised of 5 provinces: Connachta, Lagin, Mide, Mumu, and Ulaid. This Irish-owned Cooley distillery produces a whiskey made from crystal clear mountain water and the finest Irish malted barley. An extended distillation process results in a rich, smooth and uncommonly clean whiskey.

Tom Moore Cocktail
1 3/4 oz. Finian’s Irish Whiskey
3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Serve in a 4 1/2 oz. cocktail glass

A Sicilian Feast at I Trulli

March 3, 2010

The origins of La Festa di San Giuseppe date back to the middle ages, when at the end of a severe drought Sicilians prepared a lavish feast in honor of their patron saint. A San Giuseppe banquet is still enjoyed today by Sicilians, Italian-Americans and lovers of Italian food and heritage.

As a child in Puglia, I Trulli owner Nicola Marzovilla grew up with two uncles named Giuseppe, with whom he would enjoy typical fried zeppole and other specialties on this popular holiday. Who better to host his own San Giuseppe celebration?

Join us on Thursday, March 18, as we explore the culinary and cultural traditions of San Giuseppe. Chef Patti Jackson‘s delicious menu will feature some of the Marzovilla family’s favorite San Giuseppe dishes, paired with Sicily’s classic local wines. And in true San Giuseppe style, we’ll even be presenting our own tavola di San Giuseppe, a decorative altar featuring a bounteous spread of typical breads and cakes!

Wave goodbye to a decade at Vino

December 29, 2009

Well, 2010 is almost upon us, and as we prepare to embrace another decade, it doesn’t seem all that long ago that we were on the cusp of a new millennium. Yet just think how the world has changed in the last ten years: 1999 now seems like a much simpler time, an age when the terms “tweeting”, “Jon Gosselin” and “Portuguese water dog” held little or no meaning for any of us.

But when it comes to throwing a New Year’s Eve party, techno-advances and cultural shockwaves have not dampened our preference for something chilled, bottle-shaped — and the bubblier the better! To celebrate the arrival of 2010 Vino is hosting a very special tasting this Thursday evening, as we feature our selection of fun and delicious Italian sparkling wines designed to help you welcome the new year in style!

Join us from 5:30pm this Thursday, December 31. For more information please call 212-725-6516 or email contact@vinosite.com.

That don’t impress me much: just some of the things from 1999 we’re probably better off without in 2009. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I Trulli on Fox 5’s Good Day New York!

December 24, 2009

It was a very special Christmas Eve at I Trulli: the restaurant was featured on Fox 5’s Good Day New York this morning in a live cooking segment celebrating the classic dish, cavatelli with broccoli rabe. Dora Marzovilla (assisted by her grandchildren) rolled fresh cavatelli which Chef Patti Jackson cooked up for meteorologist Mike Woods. The full recipe is available on the MyFox website!
